The x-bar is a symbol which is often used with statistics on a regular basis. However, there are not a lot of people who do not know how to do this on processing programs such as Microsoft Word and if you are one of them, do not fret as through this article, we will show you how to produce an x-bar on Word in different ways such as through the symbols section and alt codes.
What is the X-Bar Symbol?
The x̄ symbol is usually used in statistics which is used to represent the mean of a set of data. In layman’s term it is what they call average or the sum of all measurements divided by the total number of measurements. As mentioned earlier, this symbol often appears in numerous formulas used in statistics and often you would need to type the mentioned symbol.
Producing the Mean Symbol in Word
There are several ways to produce the x̄ symbol and the easiest method to do this in Word 2007 is through the Equation tool. To do this, you will need to go to the insert tab which could be found on the top portion of the window. Then, go to the Equation tool on the right side portion of the window. Look for the pi symbol and click on it. This will allow you to add a new equation or click the drop-down arrow. Click on insert new equation and type an x on the field that appears in your document and highlight it. Under the Equation Tools design tab. This will automatically open whenever you add the equation, find accent in the structures section found on the upper right side. Then, click on the drop-down arrow and look for the bar symbol. This is located second from the left on the third row. Click the symbol to add to the x. You could also click the first and type an x into the space that appears below the bar.
Using Alt Codes
Another way to create they x-bar symbol or mean symbol is through the alt codes that Word uses. All you have to do is type x and hold the ALT key then type the code 0772 on your number pad before you release the Alt key. If you want a longer bar, hold the ALT key and type the code 0773 on your number pad instead.
Using Arial Unicode MS
The last way or method to write the x-bar symbol on Word is through the Arial Unicode MS font. Through this method, you could change the font to Arial Unicode MS. Then, type x where you would want the x-bar to do and then go to the symbol window. Look for symbol at the far right of the toolbar, next to the Equation section. Click on the drop-down arrow and choose more symbols. Ensure that you select Arial Unicode MS on the font section found at the upper left of the screen. Also ensure it says Unicode (Hex) in the ‘from’ section which could be found toward the bottom right of the window. In the character code field which is next to the from section, type 0305. This will bring you to the symbol. Click insert to add to the x and you are good to go.
