What is the Difference Between DVI-I and DVI-D?

Many would often use connectors such as DVI-D and DVI-I without knowing the real difference between the two. The difference between a DVI-D and DVI-I is that a DVI-D connector’s main purpose is to send out digital signal. A DVI-I, on the other hand, has the ability to send not only digital but also analog signal. Tough a DVI-D is compatible with a DVI-I connector, it will only be able to read the digital output and not the analog.

A DVI or Digital Video Interface on the other hand, is often found on most graphic cards and motherboards. It could connect a monitor and/or a projector to a computer. In most computers, a DVI connector is usually in white color while the VGA connector is often associated with color blue.

As mentioned earlier, a DVI connect could send out digital signal only and could not handle any analog signals which come from older displays. This is one of the reasons why a DVI-I connector would have more pins than DVI-D connector because a DVI-I could send not only digital but also analog signals.

Graphics cards and motherboards that has a DVI-I connector do not have any problems with connecting to flat-panel LCD monitors- which usually have DVI-D ports. The reason this is possible is because DVI-D will only read the digital output from the DVI-I connector and will set aside the analog signal.

Dual-Link connectors, on the other hand could use all 24 pins. This will allow higher bandwidth. Moreover, Dual-Link DVI also has the ability to deliver resolutions up to 2560×1600 at 60Hz or 1920 x 1080 at 144 Hz. Single-link DVI on the other hand could max out and could only handle up to 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz.
