What does Error 17 on Roomba mean?
When you get notified by your Roomba that it s experiencing error 17, this would mean that it cannot continue to clean your home. The reason behind this is due to sudden change of the environment. This could be due to lighting and interference. It could also be interrupted by a pet or human. It could also be due to corrupted software.
How to Fix Roomba Error 17
There is not enough light
When you are cleaning, you would need light for you to see. This same goes with your Roomba. No one would want to clean in the dark and this includes your Roomba.
Roomba comes with built-in cameras which could detect large furniture, small toys and other items. Hence, if it is dark, it will not be able to see these items without lights. If your Roomba cannot see, it will automatically stop cleaning. We suggest that you set up a scheduled cleaning mode and ensure to schedule it in the morning. To do this all you have to do is follow the steps below:
Ensure that your Roomba has the correct time
- Adjust it by pressing and holding the clock
- Tap day, hour and minute buttons. Keep in mind that while doing this you are still holding the clock
- Release clock
- Wait for it to beep
Customize the schedule
- Press and hold schedule
- Tap day, hour and minute as you hold to schedule
- Release schedule and wait for the beep
Dirty Sensors and Camera
If there is light and still your Roomba won’t clean, it could be that your Roomba’s sensors and cameras are dirty. Hence, it is recommended for you to clean the sensors and camera with the use of a microfiber cloth. Try to locate the three sensors and camera and gently wipe them. It is suggested for you to clean these parts at least every two weeks.
A Human or Pet is Pushing the Roomba
Roomba works alone and this means that you cannot touch it or push it while it is working as it will stop its work when you do. Keep in mind that when Roomba starts cleaning you must stay away from it or keep its pathways clear.
Firmware has slowed down

- Press the clean button for 20 seconds
- Wait for the white light to spin clockwise
- Release the button
- Wait for the light to turn off
700, 800 and 900 series roomba
- press the clean button for about 10 seconds
- Release when you hear a beep
- Wait for it to reboot
Try to make it rest for about 20 minutes.
To reset
- Open the iRobot home app
- Navigate through the settings
- Select factory reset
- Confirm the prompt
- Wait for it to finish resetting
Interference with sensors
Sensors of Roomba are sensitive. It uses infrared waves and it detects motion changes through its light. Hence if there is interference due to other gadgets, we recommend for you to put them away from your Roomba.
Lost communication with the Home Base
