For one to have an amazing gameplay and have a great and upmost gaming experience on your PS5 is to have the right monitor or television. However, we understand that choosing the correct one could be a confusing and challenging task. For example, one of the many factors you would have to consider is the refresh rate of your screen or more commonly known as Hertz or Hz. This factor is how many times your screen would refresh in every second.
Getting a monitor or TV with higher refresh rate would mean you would have a higher frame rate or in other words, you would have higher number of frames per second (FPS). This would also mean that you would have a smoother gaming experience and have lesser in-game lag and latency problems.
Nowadays, television screens that are being sold in the market often have the capacity to support PS5 on 60 FPS or 60 Hz. These are sufficient enough for you to play in a performance mode which means, you could increase performance to 120 Hz or 120 FPS. Hence, if you would want to have an ultimate experience, we suggest that you get a 4K TV or monitor which could support 120 Hz refresh rate and could work on HDMI 2.1 cables.
60 Hz Refresh Rate/ 60 FPS – PS5 supported
100 Hz Refresh Rate/100 FPS – Not PS5 supported
120 Hz Refresh Rate/120 FPS – PS5 supported
144 Hz Refresh Rate/144 FPS – Not PS5 supported
Keep in mind that if you choose a monitor or TV screen that is compatible with 144 Hz, you will also have the ability to run 120 Hz on it as well. This also goes with 100 Hz monitor which could also run 60 Hz. All you have to do is change your screen settings if you wish.
The Optimal Refresh Rate on PS5 Is 120 Hz
For you to be able to have an optimal gaming experience, you would need to have a very high refresh rate. If possible get one that has the highest refresh rate and frame rate. This way, you will be able to enable Performance Mode for compatible displays.
- Go to settings on your PS5 home screen
- Go to Saved Data
- Select Game/App settings
- Select Game Presets
- Go Performance mode or Resolution mode and select performance mode
By following the steps provided above, you will be able to play games in 120 FPS by default instead of 60 FPS. Keep in mind, however, that if you choose this type of mode, you will have to ensure that your monitor supports 4K resolution and 120Hz and HDMI 2.1 cable. With these requirements, for sure, you will be able to connect to you PS5 through the use of your HDMI 2.1 cable which is included in your PS5 package.
But My Monitor Does Not Support 120Hz
If this is your case, do not worry as you would still be able to use and play on your PS5 without any problems. Yes, your TV does not actually need to be exactly 120 Hz for it to work on performance mode. However, it would be better if you have a 144 Hz monitor or 120Hz setting.
The ability to adapt to your preferred or needed refresh rate would depend on your monitor type. Your monitor would provide you the settings on which you could tweak according to your needs. All you have to do is to press a few buttons and you are good to go.
Older screens would often only have 60 Hz or 60 FPS without performance mode with 1080p or 720p settings. Though that is the case, they would still be able to work smoothly. However, if you are into fast paced games, you would surely experience some inconveniences and hiccups whenever you are playing. Though this is the case, do not worry as this only happens once in a while and most often than not, you would still be able to play smoothly most of the the time.
Variable Refresh Rates Are Coming to PS5
Though the scenarios above still works, Sony has announced that variable refresh rates would be coming soon to PlayStation 5. This means that PS5 would now have the ability to automatically change its settings to the best performance and highest FPS by default. This means, it will automatically adapt to the capabilities of your TV or monitor.
Moreover, keep in mind that aside from the VRR, PlayStation will also be supported or only work on the new HDMI 2.1 format only. Hence, ensure that you check once in a while for new system updates. Check the update notes as they often would tell you if the VRR already has been added. If you have all these factors, you could be assured that you will have the ability to play fast paced games like Call of Duty.
