Best OS for Gaming

Windows

Windows is the most popular, widely used operating system all over the world. It was first launched in 1990 and it has widely and aggressively been developing and innovating. In fact over the years there have been a lot of versions and improvements released such as the Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and so on so forth. As for the gaming world, Windows became well-loved when they released Windows XP. Though it was followed by Vista which became controversial due to bugs, it was quickly replaced by Windows 7 which has brought gaming to the next level. Windows 8 and 8.1 however became controversial and were criticized, Windows 10 has made a huge changed and has made a mark on the gaming industry.

Linux

Linux is unique in terms of it not being a single operating system. In fact, it comes with different operating systems that are considered as open-source Linux kernel. On PCs Ubantu, CentOS, openSUSE, Arch Linux, Valve’s SteamOS and Fedora all of which are built and could be used for free. Linux is more for professional users as it comes with powerful features. It is flexible and has lower hardware requirements. However, its interface is a bit difficult to navigate and compatibility could be a challenge.

macOS

macOS goes all the way back to 1984 but it was only released and launched in 2001. In terms of popularity, macOS comes second to Windows. It is tight lock and this could both advantageous and disadvantageous. With it working with Apple hardware, this operating system becomes very efficient. It is also very safe, secured and user-friendly.

Gaming

Performance

In terms of performance, Windows and Linux tend to go head on head with this category. Windows maintains consistency in terms of frame rates while Linux could offer great performance. In fact SteamOS and Ubuntu seem to be on the lead when it comes to performance. Windows on the other hand is very reliable and consistent.

Mac, however, falls down to the last place as there are hardware restrictions and limitations. Though this is the case, Mac’s performance gets better with external GPU but you will have to invest huge amount of money to be able to achieve this.

Game Selection

Games for Linux and macOS are limited. With Linux there are about 4000 games which you could play while macOS has about 7000 supported games. Windows on the other hand could support about more than 20,000.

Online Platforms

The most popular platform is Valve’s Steam and it has the most games sold. Valve could support and is compatible with all three operating systems.

Alternatives to Steam

Origin – this is EA’s platform where they sell EA games. It is compatible with Windows and macOS and could be installed on Linux as well but is not that great in terms of performance.

Net – This is Blizzard’s platform and it only sells Blizzard games. It only supports Windows and macOS.

Microsoft Store – known as Windows Store. Sells Microsoft games and by other companies. It only supports Windows.

GoG – Sells classic games and new games as well. It supports Windows and macOS.

Verdict

After careful consideration and extensive research, we have learned that Windows is the best gaming operating system because it comes with huge selection of games and it is what most games work on and perform better compared to Linux and macOS.
