To clean the floor, you would need brushes. In fact, almost all floor cleaning materials use brushes with bristles. The only difference is that it comes with different materials and uses. Roomba, another amazing tool which could works the same way as a combination of brooms, tile scrubbers and feather dusters.

Though this Roomba cleaner is an amazing and impressive tool, there could also be some issues which it could encounter and one of them is the Error 2. If you see this error on your Roomba cleaner, for sure you would panic, but, do not worry as there are some methods and ways on how to fix this problem and issue.

Why does my Roomba Display Error 2?

Error 2 in Roomba means that its brushes cannot turn properly. The reason behind this could be due to it having too much dirt and dust on it brushes which could lead to its gears hardening and its software slowing down. This could also result to its battery to run out.

Steps to Fix Roomba Error 2

Clean the Roomba’s Brushes

Just like you are painting a canvass, if your brushes are dirty and dry with paint, you will not be able to paint, the same goes with Roomba’s brushes, if it has done its job and has traveled all over messy floors, the brushes would build up over time a lot of dirt, carpet fibers and if you have pets, pet hair. Hence, cleaning it up would definitely help out take out all the materials jammed on your brushes.

Roomba could have about two to four side brushes depending on the version and model. In fact, all models have brush rollers and the older versions have bristles such as the Roomba 400, 500, 600 and 700 series. Newer models on the other hand have rubber ones such as the Roomba 800, 900, iSeries and S series.

It is highly recommended for you to clean your brushes once a week and if you have pets, twice a week.

To clean the brushes, you would need the following:

• Microfiber cloth
• Screwdriver
• Towel or bigger cloth
• Roomba brush cleaning tool

The following could help as well:

• Small coin if you do not have a screwdriver
• Alcohol wipes if you do not have a microfiber cloth
• Can of compressed air if you wish to reach smaller fibers and corners of your Roomba

How to Clean Side Brushes

• Turn your Roomba upside-down
• Put it on a towel to make the dust fall off
• Use a screwdriver or small coin to loosen the screws of the side brushes
• With the use of a microfiber cloth or alcohol wipes, clean the brushes by lightly tapping the brushes on a surface. Keep in mind, that water to clean the brushes is highly discouraged. Water should never be used.
• Remove the yellow caps found on the both ends of the brushes. Take out the fibers and hairs caught on it. You could use your hands to do this. Once, done, put the caps back.
• Use microfiber cloth to clean the brush compartments.
• Put back the brushes
• Tighten the screws

How to Clean Brush Rollers

• Put your Roomba upside down.
• Look for the two yellow tabs and push them to open the brush guard
• Remove the bristle brush and the flexible beater brush from the cleaning head.
• Take out the yellow brush bearings
• Using a cloth or alcohol wipe, clean around and take out the hair and fibers which got stuck
• Clean the bristle brush
• Use Roomba cleaning tool
• Put all the parts back into place
• Close the brush guards
• Make sure they snap to ensure that they are secured

Put Some Oil On the Brushes’ Gears

Just as they say, for a machine not to get rusty, it needs oil and Roomba is not an exception. For your Roomba’s gears to go round and round without any troubles. It would need some help to run smooth and that is through the help of a screw driver and a lubricant. To do this, all you have to do is follow the steps below:

• Turn your Roomba upside down
• Loosen the screws
• Remove the side brush
• Take off the bottom panel
• You will find the gears in the motor inside a blue housing
• Beside the side brush motor, you will find two regular screws and a slit head screw, loosen the bolts
• Take the engine out
• Take the slit head screw. This would keep the motor in its chamber
• Open the motor housing. Be careful not to damage the snap latch
• Put some lubricant on the gears. You will also be able to turn the gears in the housing. Do not take the gears out.
• Put all the parts back and tightly close the screws

Replace the Roomba’s Brushes

There could be a time when your Roomba’s brushes would already need to retire. Imagine working everyday for 24/7 wouldn’t you eventually be worn out? Same as with your Roomba’s brushes as well. Hence, when the time comes, you could replace your Roomba’s brushes with a new one.

It is recommended for your brushes to be replaced every 6 to 12 month especially if your little bot cleaner is Roomba 600, 700, 400 Discovery and 500 Series.

Before you start the process of replacing your Roomba’s brushes, you will have to ensure that your Roomba is turned off. You will also need the following:

• Screwdriver
• Roomba replacement side brush assembly

How to Replace Your Roomba’s Side Brush:

• Loosen the side brush screw
• Remove the side brush
• Loosen the screws of the bottom cover
• Remove the bottom cover
• Take out the screws of the side brush module
• Remove the side brush module
• Get your new side brush module from the assembly and put it in
• Tighten the screws of the side brush module
• Remove the side brush
• Put back the bottom cover
• Put back the screws
• Put back the side brush
• Screw it back in
• Turn your Roomba back on

Restart or reset the Roomba

There could also be a possibility when your Roomba could be experiencing some software bug which could provide some issues and could mess up with your Roomba’s functions and abilities. Just like any other technology, bugs cannot be avoided which could cause some errors. One way to be able to fix this issue is to simply reset or restart your Roomba.

For I Series and S Series Roomba:

• Press the Clean button for about 20 seconds
• Wait for the white light to spin clockwise
• Release the button
• Wait for Roomba’s white light to turn off

For 700, 800 and 900 Series Roomba

• Press the clean button for about 10 seconds
• Release the button when it beeps
• Wait for your Roomba to reboot

When your Roomba resets, it will delete all customized settings, maps and schedules and will go back to its default setting. Hence, it is recommended that before you reset your Roomba, ensure that you have taken note of all your data before doing this. Ensure as well that your Roomba is connected to your iRobot home app.

How to Reset?

• Open your iRobot Home app
• Go to Settings
• Select Factory Reset
• Confirm the prompt
• Wait until it finishes

If this method does not work, open the app again and disable the edge clean mode. This will let your Roomba focus on the outer edges of a room. This could be found in the cleaning preferences section/option.

Charge the Battery

Sometimes when we get too preoccupied we tend to forget a lot of things such as forgetting to charge the battery of your Roomba. If there is a red light flashing on your Roomba, this is an indication that says that your Roomba’s battery is completely drained. Keep in mind that your Roomba could only work up to two hours. Also, you have to always remember that your Roomba’s Home Base should always be plugged in so that it will always be ready for charging.

There are two ways to charge your Roomba and they are through:

• Your Home Base
• Power Supply

Once your Roomba is done cleaning, it will return to its home base. It usually goes to it whenever your Roomba’s battery is low to recharge. This means, it is highly recommended for the Home Base itself to be charged. Do not wait days for your Roomba to charge as it could damage its battery which could affect the lifespan of the device itself.
